Although the washing machine is responsible for cleaning, it also needs care. This mainly concerns the filter. Often overlooked, neglect can even cause serious damage. Fortunately, removing the dirt that has accumulated in it is not complicated. Just be careful and follow the instructions.
Where is the washing machine filter located?
Before you start cleaning the filter, you need to locate it. In most appliances, it is located at the front and bottom, hidden under a rectangular cover. In some models, the filter is located inside the drum and is marked with a bright colour or a special symbol. Therefore, it is difficult not to see it. Once you have located the filter, you should remove it carefully. It is best to consult the instruction manual first, where you will usually find all the information you need about washing machine maintenance. If you do not have the manufacturer’s instructions to hand, you can proceed on your own.

- To begin, empty the drum and unplug the washing machine.
- Place a cloth or container under the filter cover. When unscrewing it, a large amount of water often spills out, so you need to be prepared to avoid wetting the floor.
- Carefully lift the plastic cover and turn the wheel to the left. Sometimes, when the filters are very dirty, you need to apply more force and even use tools such as pliers. In this case, be very careful not to damage any parts.
- Remove the filter from the hole and rinse it under running water.
Water alone only removes the coarsest dirt. It is also necessary to remove microorganisms and limescale deposits. For this, a simple solution of water and vinegar in a 1:1 ratio will be useful. You can also use special products for cleaning washing machines, available in shops. After preparing the product, scrub the filter thoroughly, for example with an old toothbrush. Then rinse with clean water; it is not necessary to dry it. Also check the condition of the hole where the filter is located, as it may also need to be cleaned. The last step is to screw the filter back in and close the cover.
Why is it necessary to clean the washing machine filter regularly?

The washing machine filter is essential, so it should not be neglected. It is through this filter that all the impurities removed from the laundry pass. Sometimes, small objects such as coins, buttons, threads, laces and even socks can also be found in it. The filter’s function is to retain these objects so that they do not reach the drain, which could cause it to become blocked and seriously damaged. These situations usually result in costly repairs. If the filter is not cleaned regularly, the washing machine will also stop working properly.
This task does not take much time and does not need to be done daily or weekly. The most common recommendation is to clean the filter at least once every two months, although it all depends on how often you do your laundry. As a preventive measure, you can check the filter once a month. Some washing machine models even have a special function that reminds the user. A clogged or dirty filter is easily noticeable. The washing machine will start to spin the clothes with less force and water will remain in the drum. Sometimes, some items of clothing will be dry and others wet. You may also notice an unpleasant smell of dampness, caused by excess moisture and the accumulation of dirt. So don’t waste any time and quickly check the condition of your washing machine’s filter.
