If you have toilet paper rolls, don’t throw them away: an idea for decorating this Christmas 2025

It’s an easy and economical idea for decorating your home for Christmas. Christmas is coming and the decorating fever is invading every corner of the house. But this year, the trend is clear: recycle and create unique decorations with what you have on hand. If you’ve saved your toilet roll tubes, now is the time to give them a second life and turn them into a Christmas nutcracker that will catch everyone’s attention. The idea is simple, economical and super original. With just a few materials and a little creativity, you can put together an elegant and eco-friendly decoration to hang on the tree or decorate any space.

What you need to make your recycled nutcracker

  • Toilet rolls (for the body, head and arms)
  • Hot glue (to stick all the pieces together)
  • Coloured card: red, white, black, gold and beige
  • Black marker (to draw the eyes)
  • Scissors and, if you want to hang it, a ribbon or bow

Step by step: how to turn the tubes into a Christmas nutcracker, step by step

  • Assemble the body: glue two toilet paper rolls with hot glue to form the trunk of the nutcracker.
  • Add the arms: cut a tube in half, roll each part and glue it to the sides of the body. The hands are made with beige cardstock.
  • Dress it: cover the body and arms with red and black cardstock. Use the gold cardstock for the typical details of the uniform.
  • Make the hat: cut the black cardstock into the shape you like best and glue it to the top.
  • Add personality: cut out the beard and moustache from white card, the nose from beige card and the eyes from white card. Glue everything on and outline the eyes with black marker.

  • Join all the parts together: use hot glue to fix each element in place.
  • Hang it on the tree: if you like, add a ribbon or bow to the top to hang your nutcracker.

With this idea, you will not only decorate your home in an original and fun way, but you will also help the environment. Recycling toilet rolls and turning them into decorations is a way to reduce waste and do your bit this festive season.
