In many homes, air conditioning is an essential ally throughout the summer. However, with constant use, ventilation grilles accumulate dust, grease and invisible fungi that directly affect the quality of the indoor air. And what is most worrying is that many people never clean them. What happens if you don’t clean them? This dust recirculates every time you turn on the equipment, which can cause respiratory discomfort, unpleasant odours, and the system to work harder. Therefore, cleaning the grilles is not just a matter of aesthetics:
- The equipment performs poorly and consumes more energy. The accumulation of dirt obstructs the air outlet.
- Mites, fungi and bacteria accumulate. Lack of cleaning can cause allergies, coughing or irritation.
- The air loses its freshness and smells strange. The dirt lodged in the grilles generates stagnant odours that can be unpleasant.
- Maintenance becomes more expensive. The longer you leave it, the more extensive the technical service will need to be and the more money you will spend.
Step by step: how to clean the grilles of your split air conditioner
- Switch off and disconnect the equipment. Never clean the grilles with the air conditioner switched on.
- Open the front cover. Most split units allow you to gently lift the top cover, which is where the grilles are located.
- Remove the filters. Although they are part of the system, they are directly connected to the grille. Remove them to clean them separately.
- Vacuum the surface dust. Using a vacuum cleaner with a thin nozzle or a dry brush, remove all accumulated dust.
- Use a damp cloth or sponge with water and mild soap. Gently wipe the grooves of the grille. If there is grease (especially in kitchens), add a few drops of mild degreaser.
- Dry with a clean cloth or leave to air dry. Do not turn the equipment back on until it is completely dry.
- Reinstall the filters and close the cover. Take the opportunity to wash the filters as well, if they are dirty. They are essential for proper functioning.

How often should you do this
- In regular use (summer): once a month.
- If there are pets or a lot of dust in the environment: every 15 days.
- In winter or out of season: clean before using again.
Some tips for improving the air in your home
- Ventilate rooms for at least 10 minutes a day.
Ventilating and thoroughly cleaning rooms helps to keep your air conditioner in good condition.
- Use HEPA filters if anyone in your home has allergies.
- Do not smoke indoors.
- Keep the area around the equipment clean (walls, ceilings, nearby shelves).
Cleaning the air conditioning grilles does not require any special tools or technical knowledge. You only need 20 minutes every now and then to improve the quality of the air your family breathes, extend the life of the equipment and reduce electricity consumption.
