The new viral gadget from Japan is a human washing machine: you get in and, in a quarter of an hour, you are completely washed and rinsed. Imagine you have little time to shower or want to ration water as much as possible. Look no further: in Japan, a human washing machine has been invented that allows you to get in and come out clean as a whistle after a few minutes of “washing”.
This peculiar invention recently went viral on social media due to the appealing nature of its proposal. And despite what the name suggests, no, there is no “drum” or “spin cycle” that could endanger the integrity of the humans on board.
The human washing machine exists and is Japanese: this is the Future Human Washing Machine presented in Osaka in 2025
Named the ‘Future Human Washing Machine’, this peculiar machine was presented to the public last June at the Osaka Expo 2025. This device is designed for a human being to enter inside and receive a complete wash in just a quarter of an hour, potentially saving time and water with each use. The first step in the process is to enter the device, designed in the form of an individual cabin. After that, water and soap are injected into the cabin. Next, the interior screen is activated, initiating a complete sensory experience with relaxing music and videos. Subsequently, rinsing and cleaning are performed using tiny water bubbles, capable of removing impurities and dirt from bare skin. Finally, the machine dries the user and, when the cycle ends, the compartment opens and they can exit. Its creators are the Japanese company Science, a company dedicated to the creation of showers that decided to diversify its business and broaden its horizons in a rather unusual way. And, given the great curiosity that this product aroused at the fair, we may be looking at a major success in the making.

A luxury that is not within everyone’s reach
For now, we know that the price of each human washing machine is 60 million yen (about €330,000 at the current exchange rate), that a very limited number of these devices will be produced (about 50) and that they are mainly intended for luxury hotels and spas. Many of the event participants agreed that it ‘solves a problem they didn’t know they had’: accurately measuring the time they spend in the shower, allowing them to better organise their busy schedules. Although we don’t know if it will replace traditional showers or bathtubs, one thing is certain: there are few things more Japanese than a machine capable of washing, relaxing and returning you to the real world in 15 minutes. And, given the furore it has caused, it would not be surprising if it became the next viral gadget from Japan.
