A simple and economical alternative that helps keep one of the main problems on hot days and during outdoor activities under control. Hot days also have their disadvantages, and one of the best known is the appearance of mosquitoes. However, the solution to this particular enemy may be at home, with a few simple ingredients.
Mixing oregano and melted wax in a jar is one option for creating a homemade repellent that keeps mosquitoes away from your home, or even during an outdoor picnic. These candles are recommended for summer, as they can be stored and are easily transportable. While many people choose to buy repellents or different commercial alternatives that are significantly more expensive, these candles can be prepared in a few minutes. The ingredients required are minimal and the step-by-step process is so simple that anyone can do it.
Ingredients
- 1 regular candle (any size, any type will do).
- 2 tablespoons of dried oregano.
- 1 small heat-resistant jar or bowl.
- 1 toothpick-type stick.
- 1 pot for melting the wax.
With wax and oregano, you can keep these insects away.

Step by step
- Preparing the wax: Cut the candle into small pieces, including the wick, and place everything in a jug. Melt the wax over low heat or in a double boiler, making sure it does not boil. As it melts, the wick will rise and float. At this point, carefully remove it and set it aside, as it will be needed later.
- Preparing the container: Take a small jar or bowl and place the dried oregano inside, spreading it out to cover the bottom without compacting it.
- Placing the wick: Cut a piece of the reserved thread and insert it into the centre of the jar, pushing the end to the bottom so that it is secure. Hold it straight while you continue with the assembly.
- Integrating the oregano with the wax: Pour the hot wax over the oregano with slow movements to avoid splashing. With a toothpick, gently push and stir the oregano so that it is well distributed within the melted wax and does not remain in a single area.
- Final filling: Add a small extra drizzle of hot wax to fill the container and cover any exposed oregano. The wick should be straight and protrude above the wax.
- Cooling and use: Leave to rest until the wax has completely solidified. Once hardened, the candle is ready to be lit and will act as a natural mosquito repellent, thanks to the aroma of oregano that is released when it burns.

It is important to note that the oregano candle does not kill mosquitoes, but repels them. When lit, oregano begins to release its essential oils, which generate a characteristic aroma, familiar to anyone who uses this spice in cooking. The truth is that, in addition to giving meals a delicious flavour, it also serves to repel these insects thanks to two key components, carvacrol and thymol. These compounds are very aromatic to us and unpleasant to the sensory system of mosquitoes, which rely on their sense of smell to orient themselves and detect carbon dioxide and human odours.
This strong aroma makes it more difficult for mosquitoes to detect people, while also altering their chemical signals, so they decide to stay away from the source of the odour. It is not an industrial repellent, but rather a natural aid that reduces the presence of mosquitoes in the area where the candle is lit.
