‘This is a sign that you need to clean your washing machine’: expert explains how to deep clean it and restore it to its original condition

Expert explains how to deep clean it with basic products and restore it to its original condition With daily use, washing machines accumulate detergent residue, moisture and limescale, which can cause mould and unpleasant odours. Although this is often overlooked during cleaning, keeping your washing machine in good condition is essential for its proper functioning and durability. In fact, careful cleaning from time to time not only improves its performance, but also prevents unnecessary repairs and provides better laundry results. This is what Ana, a content creator specialising in home and lifestyle, known on social media as, wanted to talk about. In one of her latest posts, which had over 120,000 views, she shows how to keep your washing machine in perfect condition in just a few steps and with products that everyone has at home.

How to remove dirt step by step

Cleaning starts with the rubber seal on the drum, where black stains or traces of mould usually appear. The expert recommends applying active oxygen directly to the seal, scrubbing it with a sponge and removing the dirt with a cloth. She also advises drying the seal thoroughly after each wash to prevent moisture build-up and unpleasant odours. Another point that requires attention is the detergent compartment. Ana suggests removing it completely and cleaning it with washing-up liquid and a sponge to remove any detergent or fabric softener residue that accumulates with daily use.

Filter, drum and finishing touches

One of the most important steps, in the expert’s opinion, is cleaning the filter. Before opening it, she recommends placing a towel and a container underneath, as a lot of water usually drips out. ‘You need to unscrew it gradually and empty it several times until there is nothing left,’ she explains. Then, clean it with a brush and washing-up liquid and put it back in place correctly to prevent leaks. For the drum, she suggests putting two cups of cleaning vinegar and two cups of bicarbonate of soda directly inside it. Then, simply run a short wash cycle at a temperature below 60 degrees without any clothes, which will help remove limescale, mould and any dirt residue.

As additional advice, Ana recommends leaving the drawer door open between uses to allow it to air out and prevent moisture from building up. Her method is based on four affordable products (dishwashing detergent, vinegar, bicarbonate of soda and active oxygen) and a few minutes of hard work. A simple procedure that extends the life of your appliances and improves washing results. Because sometimes the best way to take care of your home is to devote a little time to the things you use every day.
